In 2003, The Pokémon Company took over international distribution of the TCG. As Skyridge was the final expansion printed before the transition, production runs were cut short and booster boxes were scarce. Crystal Charizard and Crystal Lugia became the ultimate symbols of this transition era, blending analog cardboard collecting with cutting-edge optical Game Boy Advance computing.
High-Density Dot-Code Barcode Technology
Every e-Card release featured dedicated Dot-Code margins along the left and bottom borders. Swiping the card through an e-Reader accessory mounted on a Game Boy Advance allowed the handheld to read encrypted binary data straight from the physical ink, unlocking animations, 8-bit sound effects, mini-games, and secret Pokédex entries.
